50th Anniversary of the Moon Landing

This July marks the 50^th anniversary of the moon landing and what better way to celebrate than with a moon sand sensory bin? Bring the fun of space science into your classroom or backyard with this easy and inexpensive activity!

The excitement of the moon landing comes to life by sharing the perfect books with your students and/or child. One Giant Leap by Robert Burleigh captures the magic of the 240,000-mile journey through space before Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin finally set foot on the moon.

Kids always have a natural curiosity about space and providing them with the opportunity to feel as if the moon is within reach can ignite their passion or interest in space. To answer their endless questions and inquisitive personalities, The Moon Book by Gail Gibbons provides interesting facts about moon phases, eclipses and tides, history and more! It enriches a student’s content specific vocabulary and prompts them to ask and answer questions about the topic.

The perfect compliment to these books is having a moon sand sensory bin center! Students can model, create, play, and work on their fine motor skills with a moon sand sensory bin. Making this DIY activity requires little supplies and prep time!

Find a bin that allows students and children to play, while also having the ability to seal the sand when necessary. The better sealed your sand is, the longer you’ll be able to use the sand without it drying out.

Materials

• Bin
• Flour (4 cups)
• Baby Oil ( ½ cup)
• Molds (optional)

Add 4 cups of flour to the bin then gently pour in the ½ cup of baby oil. If you’re working with toddlers, I recommend the editable recipe option. It has a less fluffy consistency, but is safe to eat. Simply swap out the baby oil for coconut oil.  Use 2/3rds cup coconut oil for 4 cups flour.

Use your hands or a fork to combine the ingredients. Add flour or oil as necessary.

The moon comes alive with this engaging sensory bin. Your students and/or children are about to interact with space on a whole new level and ignite a passion for science!
