Out of this World Entertaining Games for Kids: Magnetic Space Sudoku

Learning Resources® has released a new game and it’s a good one! I’m always looking for ways to help my 2nd grader enjoy Math concepts, and this Magnetic Space Sudoku game does a great job of achieving that.

What’s included?

This game costs about $13, and I think that’s a fair price for the game. You get a sturdy magnetic space-themed game board that doubles up as the lid of the game box. You also get 36 double-sided sudoku puzzle cards and 36 magnetic alien pieces. The alien illustrations are bright and fun, which helps to make the game more appealing to little learners. I love that the game cards are double-sided, with some more difficult puzzles using numbers rather than alien pictures.

How the game works…

Learning Resources always seem to do so well makes their products have the ability to grow with the child. This game is no different. The first time we played, we opted to choose the simplest puzzle card, which uses just four alien colors. To complete the puzzle, you just have to ensure no doubles of the same color alien on any vertical or horizontal line across the game card. The instruction manual has all of the puzzle card answers in case you need to check them.

My seven-year-old was the first to test out the game, and he got the hang of it pretty quickly. He understood the concept and independently completed the easier puzzle cards (all cards are given a difficulty ranking). He then decided to challenge himself a little more and added in the two other colors of alien pieces, so the sudoku grid size increased along with the level of difficulty. He has always enjoyed strategy and logic games, so I was not surprised that he seemed to enjoy this game. He was careful to check his alien placement and would sometimes need to readjust his game pieces. I liked this element of problem-solving and how the game helped him to develop his logic skills.

Once his confidence was up, he was keen to flip over the game pieces and choose a game card with a number sudoku puzzle on it. This challenged him more, and it was great to see him having to think about the problems.

Great for younger learners too!

After big bro had played, four-year-old little sis was keen to try it too, and I was pleasantly surprised at how well she did! Again, I think this comes down to how well Learning resources make sure different ages enjoy their products. My preschooler loved the funny alien pictures and did a great job solving the easier alien puzzle cards. This was great for her color recognition, logic skills, problem-solving, and fine motor skills.

This is a great game for developing those all-important early Math skills, and best of all, it is enjoyable! We are looking forward to taking this one on our road trip, too as it is so easily portable. A real winner of a Math game!
