DIY Gumdrop Christmas Tree

Are you looking for a fun, screen-free activity for your little ones this holiday season? I highly recommend building Gumdrop Christmas Trees! The activity is inexpensive, has minimal setup, and is adored by people of all ages. Who doesn’t like incorporating candy into a project?!

Building structures from toothpicks and gumdrops is an excellent STEM activity incorporating science, learning, and math into play. All you need is a bunch of toothpicks and some spiced gumdrops. I had a hard time finding gumdrops locally (I was shocked since it is Christmas time!), so if you run into that issue, mini marshmallows will also work just as well.

I laid the supplies on the table and told my girls that we would try and build Christmas trees. They are only three and five years old, so they needed some advice on getting started. I explained that they first needed to build a base, and then after that, they would just add to it as they saw fit.

We talked and walked through the base building together. After that, they caught on to the process and began constructing their trees!

As the building continued, the girls would point out if the structure was wobbling, and I would show them how they could add support with more toothpicks.

Finally, all that was left was adding a yellow gumdrop star at the top.

This was a fun project and a wonderful way to incorporate a screen-free STEM activity into the holidays. If your children are a bit older, you can even set up a competition to see who can build the tallest or most elaborate tree. For younger kids, just providing the toothpicks and gumdrops will create an awesome fine motor STEM activity. Regardless of age, this is a fun project to do together as a family. It’s something that both kids and adults are sure to enjoy!

Sort & Seek Polar Animals

It’s the coolest way to explore hide-and-peek play! Within this set are five colorful numbered igloos live five arctic animal friends ready for counting, matching, and fine motor play! Animals include polar bears, penguins, walruses, narwhals, and arctic hares. Skill Sets learned are Number Identification, Fine Motor, Color Identification, and more. 

Where is the penguin? Look at the numbers with baby polar animals ready to play the day away. Easy-open, two-piece igloos are perfect for hiding animals inside—peek-a-boo! Match the igloos’ tops and bottoms for counting fun, or pop the animals on your fingers and put on a show. The choice is yours! Gather your best buddies for a skill-building expedition! Your toddler’s mind is bursting with curiosity. At this Note to Parents: stage of their development, free play and exploration can lead to tangible educational benefits.

Set out all the pieces and let their little hands and minds go to work! They may simply place the animals in the igloos, close the lids, remove the lids, and take the animals out again. That’s great: repetitive play is fun, and they’re learning! Guide their curiosity with instructive questions: “What color is the igloo? What animal is that? Can you point to its nose? Where are its eyes?” Transition gradually into more concrete educational questions. Note the one-to-one correspondence of snowflakes atop each igloo to the numbers printed on the animals’ bellies: “How many snowflakes are there?” Count aloud slowly while pointing to each snowflake—“one, two…two snowflakes!”—and then point to the printed number: “This is the number 2. It is the same number as the snowflakes we counted.” When your child is ready for more, the following activity ideas will help you lead the way! 

  • Develop color identification by naming the colors of the igloos. Have your child repeat the color names. Then, say a color (“blue”) and have your child tap the matching igloo. Next, get the animals into the act to expand your child’s color palette! Ask them to close both eyes (“no peeking!”) as you hide an animal inside each igloo and cover it with the lids. Have the child remove one of the lids, look inside, and name the new animal. Say a short sentence integrating the colors of the igloo.

  • Introduce color sorting by placing two objects in front of each igloo: one that matches the igloo’s color and one that does not. Ask, “Which one matches the igloo? Which one does not match?” Ask the children to name both colors and place the matching item inside the igloo. Can they find more small matching-color items (e.g., toy cars or play figures) to place inside? Continue with the remaining igloos and items.

  • Identify numbers on the igloos and animals with your child. Point to and say each number in order. Be sure to count the snowflakes, noting the number of correspondence. Then, have the children put the igloos in numerical order, starting with one lone snowflake. Another fun way to show number correspondence: place an animal on your finger, hold it over each igloo, and nod the animal's head the number of times indicated (i.e., one nod for number 1; 5 nods for number 5).
  • Play "What's Missing?" to develop thinking and memory skills. Start by placing three or more animals or igloos in a row. Have your child turn away while you remove one of the items. When your child turns around, ask them which item is missing. For variation, let your child see you place an animal in one of three igloos. Cover the igloos and quickly shuffle them around! Do they remember in which igloo the animal is hiding? Were they able to follow the correct igloo with their eyes? Increase the difficulty by placing animals in all three igloos, mixing them around, and then asking your child to find one specific animal.
  • Can your child name and imitate every animal? Integrate imaginative play into a fun story or song, using the animals as finger puppets. For example: "All five polar animals are playing in the snow. Two animals, a fox and a penguin, take a nap (place them in the igloo). How many animals are still playing?"

Arctic Animal Sensory Bin

Set up a simple and engaging Arctic sensory bin for the kids during your following preschool Arctic theme. 

Supplies Needed:

To start, make snow and icebergs.

  • Put varying amounts of water in each muffin tin cavity and put it in the freezer until it is frozen.

  • Make fake snow by combining 6 cups of baking soda and 1 cup of conditioner. Mix them until they are fully incorporated. 

  • Mix a few drops of blue food coloring with a couple of cups of water if you would like.

Once everything is ready, you can assemble the bin.

  • Put the “snow” on one side of the bin.

  • Then put the craft gems on the edge of the snow.

  • Slowly pour the water into the other side of the bin. Some will seep into the snow. Use less water if you don’t want it to mix into the snow too much.

  • Remove the ice from the muffin tins and place them in the water.

  • Then add the Arctic animals to the bin.

Learning about the Arctic Habitat: Have discussions about the types of animals that live in the Arctic and what their habitat is like. Pair this activity with these books to add even more learning opportunities!

Icy Penguins!

At every moment right now, everywhere on the globe, billions of people are making their holiday preparations and plans, keeping the traditions of their culture alive. During this season of merrymaking, let’s take look at holiday customs celebrated on each of Earth’s continents – with special assistance from our Puzzle Globe and Buddy Builders!

Joyeux Noël, France!

More than 66 million people live in France, a country located on the continent of Europe. On Christmas Eve, children put their shoes out near the fireplace in the hopes that Père Noël (Santa Claus) will fill the shoes with gifts. It is no surprise with all the delicious French food that most of the holiday is centered around the Christmas Eve meal, or “Le Réveillon”. Sometimes the Christmas Eve dinner will go late into the night – maybe past midnight! Those who prep for such grand meals spend lots of time at the holiday markets – open-air shopping experiences for food pop up in major cities across France during holiday time.

Located within the continent of Asia, India is home 1.32 billion people. Diwali is a colorful, light-filled feast for the eyes, celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, and Buddhists, both in India and around the world. Typically falling between mid-October and mid-November, Diwali is the triumph of good over evil or light over darkness. It is the time of year to wear new clothes, visit friends and family, and share food, gifts, and sweets, all held over the span of five days. Homes are colorfully decorated and candles are lit to celebrate the light. And what better way to bring in the light than fireworks! Amazing pyrotechnic shows captivate Indian cities during the nights of Diwali.

The United States, situated in the middle of the continent of North America, blends lots of cultures and traditions. Millions of Jewish people in the U.S. celebrate Hanukkah, or “Festival of Lights”.  Reciting prayers, lighting a menorah with candlelight, and eating lots of traditional food stretch for eight nights during Hanukkah. Kids play games with a dreidel, a spinning top marked with letters in Hebrew. They also exchange gifts and sing songs. Traditional food for Jewish families are latkes, a type of yummy potato pancakes topped with applesauce or sour cream.

In Uganda, an inland country within the continent of Africa, Christmas is referred to as Sekukkulu. Held over December 24 and 25, this holiday is about food and family. Many food traditions are centered around chicken, which is often wrapped in banana leaves to steam it, giving it a special flavor this time of year. There is far less emphasis on giving gifts during Sekukkulu, rather an emphasis on sharing food and time with family and friends. However, new clothes, especially for children, are important part when stepping out to church on this holiday.

Christmas time in the country of Venezuela, located on the continent of South America, is a very joyous and religious time, lasting nearly a month! Like many families across the world, Venezuelans’ big celebration is on the night of Christmas Eve, where all go to church to celebrate the birth of Jesus. The center of many household decorations this time surprisingly not a Christmas tree, rather a pesebre, or nativity scene depicting the manger in Bethlehem. And in Venezuela on Christmas morning, most roads are closed off for the holiday. Many take to foot to head to church, being awoken by bells or firecrackers to signify the start of the celebration.

Australia, both a continent and country, is located in Earth’s southern hemisphere. Grab the sunscreen because it is actually summertime in Australia during the holidays! Since Australians love to be outside, Christmas Day is typically spent at the beach, swimming or sailing. When Australians head out to sing their traditional “Carols by Candlelight”, they often change the traditional lyrics about snow and cold to fit their climate. The Aussies also celebrate Boxing Day on December 26, a day to recoup from the holiday, and to shop major sales from local retailers.

Antarctica, otherwise known as the South Pole (the literal polar opposite of where Santa hangs his hat), is the southern most point in the entire world. It also is the locale of the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, home to nearly 200 scientific researchers. To ring in each New Year, the scientists go out in the tundra and physically adjust the marker for the Geographic South Pole, to pinpoint the Earth’s axis of rotation. Because the South Pole itself sits onto of a sheet of ice, it moves about 30 feet every year. All the world’s flags involved in the South Pole Station surround it. What a way to ring in the New Year

Fun Facts About Thanksgiving!

Once every year, American friends and family gather together to give thanks and celebrate Thanksgiving. We eat delicious foods like turkey, and biscuits, and pie, and everyone is usually feeling happy and grateful and loving. 

Fun Fact #1: The very first Thanksgiving took place almost 400 years ago!

The story of Thanksgiving Day is also the story of America. You see, a long time ago, the king decided which church his people would attend in England. Some people wanted to choose for themselves and left England to find a place where they could pick their church. 


After traveling around for a while, these English families got on the Mayflower boat and sailed from England to America. They were hoping to land in Virginia, but the weather was terrible, and they had to stop sailing, so they landed in Massachusetts instead. 

Fun Fact #2: 101 Pilgrims came from England to America on the Mayflower! 

Massachusetts can be cold in the winter when the pilgrims landed there. Their trip took 66 days, so they were also exhausted and hungry, besides being cold. Very, very hungry. 


Lucky for the Pilgrims, the Native Americans had already lived in America for a long time. They knew how to grow food, hunt, and fish and shared their food with the starving Pilgrims. Without their help, the settlers would have died. 

Fun Fact #3: Native Americans had lived in America for more than 12,000 years before the Pilgrims came! 

The following spring, two very special Native Americans taught the Pilgrims how to use fish to prepare their lands so they could grow crops like corn, pumpkins, beans, and peas. These Native Americans were called Abenaki and Tiasquantum and were part of the Samoset tribe. 


The Pilgrims and the Samoset tribe were friends and decided to join to protect each other from other Native American tribes who might attack them. 

Fun Fact #4: Native Americans used nicknames, too. Tiasquantum’s nickname was Squanto! 

That November, the Pilgrims harvested the foods the Native Americans had taught them to grow. They had so much food that they decided to celebrate their harvest and went out to hunt for deer to eat at their feast. The Native Americans heard the Pilgrims’ guns and got worried that they would break their deal and attack them, so they sent their men to find out what was happening. 

When the Native Americans learned what the Pilgrims were doing, they joined in the hunt. The Pilgrims invited them to their feast to say thank you for all that the Native Americans had taught them. All in all, 53 Pilgrims and 91 Native Americans were at the First Thanksgiving! Can you imagine having 144 people at your house for Thanksgiving? Instead of turkey, biscuits, and pie, the Pilgrims and Native Americans ate deer, corn, shellfish, and roasted meat. 

Fun Fact #5: The celebration lasted for three whole days! The Pilgrims must have been stuffed! 

The American people celebrated the fall harvest for another 200 years until President Abraham Lincoln officially declared Thanksgiving Day in 1863. Now we celebrate Thanksgiving every year on the fourth Thursday in November.

The story of Thanksgiving Day is also the story of America. You see, a long time ago, the king decided which church his people would attend in England. Some people wanted to choose for themselves and left England to find a place where they could pick their church. 


After traveling around for a while, these English families got on the Mayflower boat and sailed from England to America. They were hoping to land in Virginia, but the weather was terrible, and they had to stop sailing, so they landed in Massachusetts instead. 

Fun Fact #2: 101 Pilgrims came from England to America on the Mayflower! 

Massachusetts can be cold in the winter when the pilgrims landed there. Their trip took 66 days, so they were also exhausted and hungry, besides being cold. Very, very hungry. 


Lucky for the Pilgrims, the Native Americans had already lived in America for a long time. They knew how to grow food, hunt, and fish and shared their food with the starving Pilgrims. Without their help, the settlers would have died. 

Fun Fact #3: Native Americans had lived in America for more than 12,000 years before the Pilgrims came! 

The following spring, two very special Native Americans taught the Pilgrims how to use fish to prepare their lands so they could grow crops like corn, pumpkins, beans, and peas. These Native Americans were called Abenaki and Tiasquantum and were part of the Samoset tribe. 


The Pilgrims and the Samoset tribe were friends and decided to join to protect each other from other Native American tribes who might attack them. 

Fun Fact #4: Native Americans used nicknames, too. Tiasquantum’s nickname was Squanto! 

That November, the Pilgrims harvested the foods the Native Americans had taught them to grow. They had so much food that they decided to celebrate their harvest and went out to hunt for deer to eat at their feast. The Native Americans heard the Pilgrims’ guns and got worried that they would break their deal and attack them, so they sent their men to find out what was happening. 

When the Native Americans learned what the Pilgrims were doing, they joined in the hunt. The Pilgrims invited them to their feast to say thank you for all that the Native Americans had taught them. All in all, 53 Pilgrims and 91 Native Americans were at the First Thanksgiving! Can you imagine having 144 people at your house for Thanksgiving? Instead of turkey, biscuits, and pie, the Pilgrims and Native Americans ate deer, corn, shellfish, and roasted meat. 

Fun Fact #5: The celebration lasted for three whole days! The Pilgrims must have been stuffed! 

The American people celebrated the fall harvest for another 200 years until President Abraham Lincoln officially declared Thanksgiving Day in 1863. Now we celebrate Thanksgiving every year on the fourth Thursday in November.

The Great Pumpkin Experiment

The shelves are bursting with candy corn confections this time of year. The mellocreme pumpkin is a treat made of honey and sugar, simply ripe with scientific possibilities. Grab your little goblins for this ghoulish experiment: dissolve candy pumpkins in different liquids. Stand back to watch the magic! This is an experiment of testing hypotheses. What does your little scientist think will happen in each liquid? Will the pumpkins float? Sink? Dissolve? Stay intact? What happens if you add a little heat? Let’s find out!

Supplies:

  • Candy corn pumpkins
  • Clear glasses
  • Water, warm and cold
  • Vinegar
  • Vegetable oil
  • Milk
  • Microwave
  • Timer

1. Label your clear glasses for each liquid. Fill your glasses about half full.
2. Drop in each pumpkin. Observe for any immediate reaction. Grab your timer and begin to measure your observations in five-minute increments.

3. 5 Minutes: There was lots of bubbling in the warm water and little difference to the other liquids.

4. 10 Minutes: The cold water and vinegar liquids began to turn orange as the sugar “skin” of the pumpkin began to shed, but not much change for the pumpkin in milk.

5. 15 minutes: The cold water, warm water, and vinegar pumpkins all began to shed their “skin,” providing a spooky element to the experiment!

6. 30 Minutes: At last! The theory that the pumpkins might float comes true as the pumpkin’s sugar skin lifts it to the top of the glass. This might provide giggles, as your experiment now looks a little haunted. Who invited the ghost?

8. To add a little interest, put the oil pumpkin in the microwave for 20 seconds. You’ll find it will bubble and then wholly flatten out.

9. Have an adult fish the flattened pumpkin out. You will find it is very pliable and is almost plastic-like in consistency. Your little scientists might be taken aback that this is, in fact, something we can eat!

Findings

The milk broke down the sugary pumpkin over time by dissolving it. The warm water made the reaction slightly faster, but the two water temperatures and the vinegar broke down the candy first, creating sugar “ghosts” from the outer coating. And while the oil had little effect on the pumpkin when resting in the liquid, adding the heat made the natural reaction occur. It was decided that time was the fundamental factor in this experiment: the more time the pumpkins sat in the liquids, the more chances to observe!

Be Cold & Flu Season Ready: DIY Hand Sanitizer!

The chill in the air! The crunch of the leaves! The sights and sounds of autumn are here! Everything is cozy and crisp and wonderful, and…ACHOO!

As the first sneeze of the season rings through your house, it can only mean one thing: cold and flu season is upon us. Let’s prepare together by making a cost-effective, all-natural hand sanitizer to keep those nasty germs at bay.

This easy activity opens up discussions on practicing healthy habits during this germ-filled time of year. Here are a few reminders:

Wash or sanitize hands whenever possible

Germs are everywhere – there’s no way around it. But sanitizing or washing hands is the best way to prevent them from spreading. Rub in sanitizer to the palms and back of hands, and teach little ones to wash hands with soap for as long as it takes to sing “Happy Birthday” twice.

Clean areas children touch frequently.

Wipe down doorknobs, toys, railings, electronic tablets, remote controls, etc., with disinfectant. You obviously can’t chase after your children with a Clorox wipe every moment, but staying on top of cleaning surfaces makes a huge difference in germ transfers.

Scrub down that bathroom

A hygienic bathroom during cold and flu seasons is a must. Top-to-bottom care is essential in this busy hub in your home. The toilet handle, the sink, and the floor should enjoy frequent cleanings. And don’t forget to wash hand towels…and then rewash them.

Teach the beloved “vampire” to sneeze and cough

This one comes with some practice, but teaching kids to sneeze or cough in the elbow crook is a huge step in preventing the spreading of germs. If you stick with it, you will notice that the “vampire” move quickly becomes a knee-jerk reaction.

Lastly, call your little ones in sick.

If your child has a temperature or isn’t acting like him or herself, keep them home. No one knows your child better than you, so it’s best to err on caution if something seems off.

To make your own hand sanitizer, you will need: 

  • 8 ounces Aloe Vera gel
  • One tablespoon witch hazel
  • ¼ teaspoon tea tree oil
  • ¼ teaspoon Vitamin E oil
  • Essential oils, a variety of scents
  • Travel-sized spray bottles 

First, decide which essential oils you’d like to use. Four scents were chosen here, and we were creative in decorating each spray bottle with labels. If it’s going to be attached to you all during cold and flu season, you might as well make it nice-looking. 

Fill a measuring cup with 8 ounces of Aloe Vera gel. Aloe Vera’s job is to serve as the base of the sanitizer and to be very gentle on the skin. 

Next, add the active ingredients. Begin with the witch hazel, adding one tablespoon. Witch hazel is a natural cleanser that protects against infection.

Alcohol can be used in its place, but witch hazel is far less drying. 

Add ¼ tablespoon of tea tree oil. When it is in 0.5-1.0% concentration form, tea tree oil is powerful in killing most bacteria and is potent when preventing infection. (The other thing that is powerful about tea tree oil is its scent. The kids might not love how strong it is, but once the essential oils are added to the hand sanitizer mixture, the odor dissipates). 

For extra moisture, add Vitamin E oil. A common complaint about store-bought sanitizers is how drying they can be, mainly applied for days (and months). Vitamin E and aloe make this homemade version easier on the kids’ hands. And it is thick! 

Lastly, add the essential oil for scent. The overwhelming favorite in this house was peppermint. Pour into your cutely made spray bottles. Stash them away in the kids’ backpacks, lunch boxes, cup holders of their car seats, or anywhere in between! Best of luck this cold and flu season!

5 Tools for Your Fall Discovery Table

Are you excited about the fall? Cooler weather, changing colors, and leaves and seeds on the ground make for a great time to get outside and explore nature. Bring a nature inside and set up a discovery table. Today I’m sharing five tools for your fall discovery table. These items will help your little scientists make observations and use real science tools in the process.

5 Tools to Add:

1. Sensory Tubes: Sensory Tubes are a fantastic way to let children observe things through sight and/or smell. They are especially handy for items that you don’t necessarily want the children to touch (sticky pine cones, for example). I added different nature items to the sensory tubes and then also placed items on the tray that can be touched and explored. The focus in this particular discovery table is comparing seeds and leaves. I chose a seed pod, leaves, pine cones, and pine needles. 

Questions to ask:

  • What do you notice about the different leaves? (colors, shape, size) 
  • What time of year do trees like sycamore and maple lose all of their leaves? (fall/autumn) 
  • Pine cones and pine needles come from evergreen trees. They lose their needles a little at a time; not all at once. Compare the green pine needles to the brown ones. What do you think the difference is? (time – the green needles fell more recently than the brown needles, the brown needles are older/drier) 

2. Magnifying Glass: A magnifying glass is perfect for looking at objects more closely. Lay a magnifying glass next to a few nature objects and encourage your child to explore. Here I’ve used walnuts, bark, and pine cones.  

Observations to make: 

  • What do you notice about the different kinds of bark? (color, texture, etc.) 
  • Look at the inside of the walnut. Compare it to the outside. 
  • How is the small pine cone similar to the large pine cone? (look at the cone scales, or seed scales) 

3. Tweezers: Tweezers are a tool worth using for multiple reasons. Your child can take things apart like these sycamore seeds to observe the insides more closely. (Combine the tweezers with the magnifying glass.) Tweezers also work on fine motor skills and hand strengthening. Encourage your child to pick things up with the tweezers. Move things from one side of the tray to the next.  

4. Tape Measure or Ruler

Measuring is a science and math skill that is important to practice. Once you’ve taught your child how to use a ruler or tape measure properly, set them off to compare the sizes of different nature items. We used the tape measure and ruler. My kids love finding the objects on the card and then measuring them. Taking the tape measure outside on your next nature walk would also be fun. Measure the distance between trees or the length of a large rock. The possibilities are endless. 

5. Balance: My favorite addition to the fall discovery table is a balance. We used the Three Bear Family® Beginner's Balance Set (similar item shown). The set comes with caterpillars and leaves in different sizes and weights. I placed the leaves next to the balance and added in some nature items (pinecone, walnuts, acorns, etc.). Encourage your child to explore the balance. Talk to her about how the scale works. When the items on each side weighh the same, the balance will be in the middle. The heavier side will be lower than the lighter side. 

Questions to ask: 

  • How many leaves will it take to balance a walnut? 
  • Which is heavier: a pine cone or an acorn? 
  • Which weighs less: a hickory nut or three orange leaves?
