Stay At Home STEM: What Makes 10? Challenges

Make-ten strategic games are a neat way to practice addition while the kiddos are home during this time off of school. Developing a “mind picture” for what numbers add up to the mighty TEN help many kids to begin mental math solving with ease - all with supplies you have right there at home!  “We’ve seen a big change with little ones learning math. We recognize that there’s a significant difference between memorizing and understanding,” says Maureen Crowe, Special Education Associate in Glenview, Illinois. Below are some “What Makes 10?” exercises to do during your daily allotted academic hours at home over these unique weeks. Like so many learning opportunities during the little years, making a game of number facts can help shape how your children approach academic challenges throughout their school career.   So we say let’s work on understanding and bond some numbers!

Snap Cubes Challenge

Learning Resources’ Snap Cubes –  or any other brick building blocks – are a great tool for mathematical concepts. Incrementally build towers of ten. Or separate colors for children to snap together groupings of ten. Grab your white board to spell out specific instructions to snap different building blocks together, all to get to that magical number.

What Makes 10? Number Search

A worksheet can get the gears cranking, and might be great for quiet academic time. What added together makes 10? You could simply graph out a worksheet on loose leaf, or print one out here.

Coloring Adding Challenge

Here we used Learning Resources’ Take 10! Color Bug Counters, but you can use toys, building blocks, craft pom poms, or anything else you can sort to do this challenge. Create a method that helps you select colors and theroll dice for the numerical amount. Using felt or construction paper, create a +, =, and 10. Have children fill in what they roll.

Solo Cup Slide Challenge

With an old poster board, red Solo cups, and some tape, we made an interactive way to slide to get to 10. You can grab any household item as your slider, but here we grabbed jelly beans, separated by color. Roll dice or simply call out how many each child can slide down the cup. At the end, how many are in the bowl?

What Two Parts Make Ten?

Number pairs make up all the different combinations of numbers resulting in one specific sum. Take a household item like dice, or a learning toy like the Snap-and-Learn Counting Cows, and bring pairs together to make 10. Stay healthy and safe! Happy number bonding!
