DIY Coding Candy Canes!

I’m sure by now you have heard about how beneficial “STEM activities” are for children, but many of you may be wondering what that means or entails. STEM activities are anything that promotes curiosity and growth in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math.

Although those topics may sound pretty advanced for a preschooler or young child, there are many easy ways to incorporate a love for these concepts in the early years! Curiosity, creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking are at the heart of STEM! These are traits that the youngest child can be encouraged to explore.

One fun topic that we’ve been interested in lately is coding! I would have never imagined that my three and 5-year-old would be excited about something that I thought was so complex, but boy was I wrong. Their fascination began when we started playing with various imaginative play toys to teach them coding, our favorite being Botley the Coding Robot. They were instantly intrigued by the reactions that resulted from the commands they typed in!

I loved watching their little minds click as they realized that each command change would create a different outcome. To foster their new love for this concept, I began providing additional screen-free activities to help them become better at following patterns and various steps. Here is a fun, holiday-themed coding activity you can easily create for your little one.

Coding Candy Canes!

Supplies Needed for Coding Candy Canes

Pipe cleaners, pony beads, paper, and markers. Cut each pipe cleaner into three pieces and bend them into a candy cane shape. Next, select the colors or beads that you want to use. I recommend 2-3 colors for younger children, but you could use as many as you wish for an older child. Because the activity was for both of my daughters, I chose only red and green.

Putting it together

Lastly, take your paper and draw various candy canes on it, adding colored “bead dots” with your markers in the patterns or order you want your child to mirror.

Provide your child with pipe cleaner candy canes, beads, and paper. Ask them first to sort the beads into different color piles. Then, instruct them to create candy canes that match the ones on the paper. My girls loved this activity, and we hung the finished candy canes around our playroom as festive décor.

So there you have it: an inexpensive, low-prep, and screen-free way to introduce coding to your child! I hope that you found this informative and that it sheds some light on just how fun and easy STEM activities can be.

The Best of Toy Fair 2020!

We're finally settled back into the office after another exciting year at Toy Fair 2020, and we figured now would be the perfect time to share with you some of our favorite moments from our time in New York. From a big win for Coding Critters to Botley 2.0's adventures in the Big Apple, we had enough adventures to make this our best Toy Fair yet!

CODING CRITTERS WINS TOY OF THE YEAR!

You couldn't have coded a better start to this year's Toy Fair than the one we got on Friday night, when our own Coding Critters won Preschool Toy of the Year at the Toy Industry Association's annual Toy of the Year (TOTY) Awards! Released in 2019, "your first coding friends" have already helped thousands of kids as young as 4 take the first steps on their lifelong coding journeys."With votes coming from toy industry professionals, press, and the general public, this Toy of the Year award represents a big vote of confidence in Coding Critters' mission to teach preschool coding fundamentals through fun storybook coding adventures," said Marie LaPlante, chief marketing officer for Learning Resources. "They've helped solidify Learning Resources' place as an industry-recognized leader in early coding."

The win by Coding Critters represents our second TOTY win in a row, and third overall; in 2019, Botley the Coding Robot won Innovative Toy of the Year, joining 2016's Specialty Toy of the Year winner Tumble Trax in Learning Resources' trophy case.

BOTLEY'S BIG APPLE CHALLENGE!

Speaking of Botley: our award-winning coding robot showed off some new skills as Botley 2.0 invited visitors to sharpen their coding skills with his Big Apple Challenge! During these multiplayer races, players coded their Botley 2.0s through a New York-inspired obstacle course featuring replicas of Central Park, the Lincoln Tunnel, and more. In addition to winning prizes, players also got to test out Botley 2.0's cool new features, including a night-vision light sensor, colorful light-up eyes, six-direction movement, and fun hidden transformations!

25 YEARS OF THE CALCULATOR CASH REGISTER!

Our Calculator Cash Register celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2020, and we decided to mark the occasion by giving out a little cash of our own. During our 25th Anniversary Cash Register Cash Grab, visitors to our booth got the chance to pull a souvenir bill from the drawer of our iconic cash register; $2,500 of real money and Learning Resources gift cards! In addition to giving folks a little extra spending money for their time in New York, we also matched our giveaway with $2,500 in product donations to the Kids in Need Foundation!

THE PRESS LOVES US!

Our booth was buzzing with members of the media during Toy Fair, with reporters from CNN, ABC, CBS, and more stopping by to chat about our new toys. Judging by their reactions, they liked what they saw; our Peekaboo Learning Farm was selected by POPSUGAR as one of 180+ Brand-New Toys That Your Kids WIll Want to Play With in 2020, and our Super Selves! Reward Capes were selected as a Fatherly Favorite Best Toys at Toy Fair 2020!  With all of these great early reactions, we can't wait to see what's in store for the rest of the year!

National STEM Day Activities!

Host a STEM-tastic Playdate to Celebrate November 8!

Invite the whole crew over for National STEM Day this November 8th with a science-, technology-, engineering-, and math-themed playdate!National STEM Day began in 2015, as our nation began to recognize that STEM-centered careers were growing 70 percent faster than other occupations. Research has shown the introduction of STEM concepts to children can improve their social and emotional development, as well as their rational thinking skills.

STEM really goes beyond conveying knowledge from teacher to student. Kids learn problem-solving, critical thinking skills, and collaboration with their peers. Connections are made between school, community, and home that seem to stick. The real-life implications of STEM pull together ideas that teach children that what they learn, as well as the ideas they share, benefit our world as a whole.Screenshot STEM

Let’s bring together all these concepts into a big, fun playdate. With the help of Learning Resources’ STEM-centered products, we engineered an engaging afternoon with our friends, completely screen-free.(And another beauty of STEM? It knows no age. If little brothers and sisters want to join in on the fun, the more the merrier!)We sent out invites, had our friends over, and made an afternoon of activities!

STEM Station #1: Botley

STEM Botley Materials

Spread out on the living room floor for our first STEM Station was Botley. This little coding robot lives up to its reputation for out-of-the-box fun. From the first moment Botley lit up and began chatting with our friends, it was love at first code.

STEM Botley with Remote

With just a quick skim of the directions, the friends were coding in minutes. Before we knew it, Botley was pushing around blocks and racing toward the finish line.STEM Botley with Rock

A solid 45 minutes was spent at the Botley station, as the friends took turns sending Botley backwards and in circles. (It was hard to tear the kids away to move to the next station, but our playdate clock was ticking.)STEM Botley at Play

STEM Station #2: Beaker Creatures

STEM Beaker Creatures Materials

Our friends moved from the floor to the kitchen table to discover the fizzy, funny wonder of the Beaker Creatures Reactor Pods. Each mysterious pod is filled with an alien traveler. Who were they going to discover? Each individually wrapped pod comes with a classification card that will help our friends figure out who is who.Time to drop in our first discovery.

As they waited and watch the water foam, the friends tried to figure out which alien could be lurking in the inky waters.

All set! Who did we get?

Filling out the identification card made the friends feel like they were classifying new species from out of this world.

And soon one bowl was not enough. Let’s dissolve more! Who can we add to our collection?

STEM Station #3: Coding Critters

STEM Coding Critters Rumble Materials

We set up an additional folding table in the family room to accommodate all our scientists, technicians, engineers, and mathematics for more STEM-tastic discoveries. Station #3 included the Rumble and Bumble, the adorable Coding Critters. Similar to Botley, Rumble and Bumble are screen-free, coding fun. The Coding Critters come with a storybook. First things first, the older friends read to the younger ones about with whom they were about to play.

Rumble and Bumble’s playset was fun to set up, but even more fun to knockdown. Once the friends figured out how to get Rumble moving, the crashing began!STEM Coding Critters Playing with Rumble

The Coding Critters have a “code mode” and a “play mode”. In the play mode, our friends began to interact with Rumble like it was a real live pet! There were even challenges in the storybook…one was how to teach Rumble to have a snack with Bumble.

Like all awesome playdates, our time had to end. But the afternoon of STEM-centered fun will not soon be forgotten!Happy National STEM Day!
